The Plaza Restaurant

Santa Fe, NM
June 2001

Dear Jake & Amelia,
Santa Fe was smaller than we expected. It is jammed with galleries, shops and cosmopolitan people. We'd never seen so much adobe. We visited a number of interesting and wonderful museums. We saw a beautiful exhibit of Hopi pottery by Dextra Nampeyo at the Wheelwright Museum. Her work is as magical as the Mesas where she lives.

At the Plaza, the Indian vendors were sitting against the wall of the Palace of the Governors. Their wares, mostly jewelry and pottery, were spread on blankets before them. The quality  was good and the prices were reasonable. We walked into a couple of galleries. The pieces were exquisite, but the prices scared us from going into more.

We found found an unpretentious restaurant  with booths and counter right on the Plaza. We keep going back. The meatloaf was spicy,  filled with spinach and cheese. The Mexican chop salad with cumin lemon dressing was refreshing. When we looked closely, we saw that the mosaic above the counter was made from broken diner plates.
