Cedar Breaks Field

Cedar Breaks Wildflowers
August 2001

Dear Jake & Amelia,
We had driven over high plateaus on dirt roads to reach Cedar Brakes National Monument. We had camped in high, cool air among Engelman spruce and subalpine fir. We had walked through meadows of rolling grasses that looked as if someone had thrown a handful of colored confetti over them. We had walked through a woodland whose floor was covered with shade plants and admired delicate columbine blossoms. Yarrow, scarlet paintbrush, aspen bluebells, penstemon, fleabane, silvery lupine and cinquefoil were some of the many wildflowers in bloom.

We drove away, breathing in the cool air, our eyes delighted by the subalpine colors. Reluctantly, we drove down from the high plateau and off the Indian Country Map. To console ourselves, we listened to the Carlos Nakai tape given to us by our camp neighbors. We hope to meet them again.
