Little Ruin Canyon

Hovenweep, UT
July 2001

Dear Jake & Amelia,
Yesterday we drove to Hovenweep by the north route. We turned left off Route 666 onto a graded dirt road. We drove past green fields, barn size stacks of cubed hay and farm buildings. The fields were irrigated with the wheeled pipe sprinklers that are common here. The vegetation turned to shrubs as we drove through BLM land. Finally we reached Hovenweep. The day was hot, hot, hot.

Before visiting the 800 year old structures, we ate lunch on a bench in the relative cool of the old Ranger's station. Then we walked out into the afternoon sun. The Square Tower Group Trail was beautiful. It wound around the canyon rim, past ruins, then descended into the canyon and up the other side. The sun was relentless, beating down at the hottest part of the day. The ruins were wonderful, balanced on the edge or below the edge of the canyon, fitted into the rocks with a beauty of connection.

We stopped at the Holly Unit and hiked to Boulder House. The structure, perched on a rock in the canyon, was breathtakingly beautiful. The heat was also breathtaking.
